Dear Mr. Abramson:
Thanks for your note of February 28. You are right that
my letter admits a comparison of genocides, and I'm sorry about
that.
Schanberg still doesn't make the connection that his bribery
helped in some small way to convince Cambodians not to take their
defense against the Khmer Rouge seriously and therefore helped
bring about the situation from which he helped rescue his friend.
I suppose that if an American defensive war against a communist
takeover were involved, he would have thought harder about the
consequences of a communist victory.
As someone said, there is nothing like the prospect of
being hanged to concentrate the mind, and the prospect of being
hanged oneself concentrates the mind better than the prospect of
someone else being hanged.

P.S. It would be nice to have Mr. Safire's thoughts on finding
a better name for the study of how to make computers behave
intelligently.
